Golden Chai Latte is a cozy turmeric drink recipe It has the warming spices of Masala Chai Tea (yes I know Chai means Tea!) and the earth flavor of turmeric, making golden milk chai latte delicious both iced and hot- perfect for fall, winter or summer.

    Ingredients

You will need a few simple ingredients for this warming fall latte if making from scratch. I also show a quick hack below using a Masala Chai tea bag:

    • Spices: you will need a cinnamon stick, ground black pepper, fresh ginger and cloves (If you use 1 Masala Chai tea bag, you can skip the spices as the tea bag will contain them.)
      • If using regular cow's milk, ginger powder would work better, as fresh ginger may curdle the milk.
      • If you don't have enough fresh ginger, grate instead of slicing to get a stronger flavor- I slice because grated ginger is more difficult to get out of the drink- you need to sieve it, instead of just picking up the pieces.
      • There is a lot of flexibility around the spices used in Masala Chai Tea. Feel free to add other spices that you like, such as cardamom. If you're looking for a Chai Latte without caffeine, click here.
    • Tea: Black tea is traditional, but you there is also a version of Chai with Green Tea. Either 1 tea bag or 1 Tablespoon of tea leaves per mug work.
    • ½ teaspoon Turmeric Powder: I use Turmeric powder not sliced fresh turmeric as the latter takes a lot longer to turn the milk such a vivid gold color. (The latter is also more troublesome as you can't just slice it- you will need to pound and strain.) Click here for more Turmeric recipes.
    • 1 Cup of Milk: I like whole milk but if using fresh ginger, it can make the milk curdle. You can switch to a plant-based milk of your choice if vegan, such as almond milk, soy milk, oat milk etc.
      • To make the milk more frothy, heat it before whisking. You'll be surprised by how much easier it is to froth heated milk!
    • 1 Tablespoon of coconut milk: I do not recommend using 100% coconut milk because the turmeric drink then tastes like a sweet curry sauce! (I tried.) Instead, adding 1 Tablespoon of coconut milk gives the drink a nicer texture and flavor.
    • 1- 1½ Tablespoon honey or to taste. Maple syrup and sugar work too.
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract: It sounds weird but when I tasted the drink without, it didn't taste as good. Vanilla also makes the drink sweeter so reduces the sugar/ honey you need to add.

Quick hack: if you've already made my Chai Syrup Concentrate, you can steep the Masala Chai teabag, stir in the milk, then sweeten to taste with the chai syrup.

    Ingredients

    • 1 cinnamon stick Substitute: 2 Masala Chai Tea Bags. You can the tea, ginger and cloves too if using the Masala Chai tea bag.
    • 2 ground black pepper 3-5 turns of the pepper mill or to taste
    • 1 inch fresh ginger Slice, no need to peel- just ewash well. Substitute with ginger powder if using cow's milk
    • 3 cloves
    • 1 Black Teabag Substitute: ½-1 Tablespoon black tea leaves
    • ¾ Cup water
    • ½ teaspoon Turmeric Powder
    • 1 Cup milk You can switch to a plant-based milk of your choice if vegan, such as almond milk, soy milk, oat milk etc. To make the milk more frothy, heat it before whisking.
    • 1 Tablespoon coconut milk
    • 1-1½ Tablespoon honey
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    Instructions

    • Optional step to make spices more fragrant: Pound the cinnamon, cloves with the back of a rolling pin. In a dry pot, lightly toast the spices till fragrant (for 2-3 minutes over low heat).
    • Add the ginger, pepper and water the same pot, (If you skipped the previous step, make sure the cinnamon and cloves are in the pot.) Cover, bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer on low for 5-6 minutes.
    • Switch off the heat, and steep the tag in the covered pot for 5 minutes.
    • Mix in the turmeric, vanilla and honey. You can make this 2-3 days before you want to assemble your Golden Chai Drink. (This recipe makes 1 Cup so you have to double or triple it if you want a bigger batch.)

    To assemble the drink

    • Heat the milk and coconut milk, then mix with the (stirred)spice-tea mixture you made previously.

    Notes

There is a lot of flexibility around the spices used in Masala Chai Tea. Feel free to add other spices that you like, such as cardamom. Even if using a Masala Chai tea bag, you can add spices to accentuate the spices you like (as the flavor of a Masala Chai tea bag is milder than making from scratch with spices.)

Hi I'm Zhen also known as GGG! I couldn't boil water till I was 18! However, I love creating community and nurturing people, so when I lived abroad (in St. Andrews then London) for 11 years, I started hosting regular parties for friends, and that's how I started cooking and helping out in professional kitchens. (Couldn't cook before that!) I even organised a supper club for charity (which strangers came to!) Learning to cook late, I make sure my recipes go into enough detail for those new to Asian cuisine or who love a test kitchen approach to cooking!
