The aniseed flavor of Thai Basil leaves go really well with many Thai dishes! Scroll down for the list:

    Noodles

    Drunken Noodles

Using chopsticks to pick up some spicy Drunken Noodles.

This easy recipe is just as good as the one at your favorite Thai restaurant! It's so simple, you can make it perfectly the first time.

To bulk the dish up, you can also add green beans and chicken- I recommend chicken thighs, not chicken breast, as it stays juicy longer (even if you overcook it slightly.)

Tip: I usually use Lee Kum Kee oyster sauce.

Authentic Drunken Noodles Recipe (Pad Kee Mao)
This is an Authentic Drunken Noodles recipe, also known as Pad Kee Mao or Drunkard Noodles, that is on the table in 20 minutes, perfect for a quick and easy weeknight dinner! I show you how to make it with fresh and dried rice noodles. (If you can't take spice, I have tips on how to make this Thai food dish less spicy.)

    Pad Kee Mao Spaghetti

Thai Basil Spaghetti with "ways to use Thai Basil" under it.

If you can't get rice noodles, you can make this easy Thai pasta instead. And if you can't get black soy sauce, you can substitute with dark soy sauce.

Note: you can replace the tinned tuna with ground chicken or ground turkey (but this will increase the cooking time, as the meat needs to be cooked thoroughly, and you may need to add more salt, as the tinned tuna is naturally salty.)

    Easy Drunken Noodles Recipe (Spaghetti)
This easy Drunken Noodles recipe, also known as Drunkard Noodles recipe (Pad Kee Mao), uses readily available ingredients, such as spaghetti and canned tuna, but also shares the steps and ingredients to make an authentic version. It's a deliciously quick weeknight dinner, on the dinner table in under 30 minutes! (Despite the name, there is no alcohol in the recipe- the spicy noodles do taste amazing with a cold beer though!)

    Rice

    Thai Basil Fried Rice (Vegetarian)

A spoonful of vegetarian Thai fried rice with Thai basil, peas, carrots and chilies.

Note: both jasmine rice and brown rice work for this recipe.

Thai Basil Fried Rice (Vegetarian) (20 min)
This Vegan/ Vegetarian Thai Basil Fried Rice is a deliciously easy dish on the dinner table in under 20 minutes. It's the ultimate Asian comfort food: sweet, salty, savory, and budget-friendly! (Not including rice cooking time, if not using leftover rice.)

    Shrimp Fried Rice

Serve with sliced green onions and a crispy fried egg on top and you'll feel like you're back in Thailand!

Thai Basil Fried Rice with Shrimp (Khao Pad Goong)
This Thai Basil Fried Rice with Shrimp (Khao Pad Goong) is quick easy and delicious: it's on the table in under 30 minutes if you have leftover rice. Plus making it at home means you can save money and custmise it to your desired spice level!

    Stir Fried Chicken

White rice and Thai-inspired chicken with Thai basil on a white plate.
Easy Thai Basil Chicken (20 minute)
This easy Thai Basil Chicken is a delicious dish on the dinner table in just 20 minutes! As it has capsicums in it, it's a complete meal with just a bowl of white rice. It is similar to but NOT Pad Gra Pao Gai (as that dish calls for Holy Basil, not Thai Basil, which is more difficult to get in the West.) I have made the recipe with easy-to-get ingredients in the US, but also included instructions for making an authentic Thai Chicken dish.

    Pad Kra Pao Mince

Thai Basil Pork mince and rice with text in between.
Thai Basil Pork Mince (Pad Kra Pao Moo)
This Thai Basil Pork Mince, or Pad Kra Pao Moo (Pad Gra Pao Pork), is an easy stir-fry but SO TASTY. It's one of favorite authentic Thai food recipes and I must have eaten this Asian street food dish at least 100s of times over the 20 years my Father lived in Bangkok.

    Veggie Curry

Thai-inspired curry with pea eggplants and pork, scooped over rice.
Thai Pork and Turkey Berry (Pea Eggplant) with Coconut Milk Curry Recipe
Inspired by Thai green curry, but without using cilantro roots which can be hard to get outside of Asia, this is an easy and tasty way to cook up your turkey berries.

    Thai Pesto

For this delicious Thai pesto sauce, you will need:

    • 2 Cups of loosely packed fresh Thai basil: you can supplement with regular basil if you don't have enough
    • ½ bulb of galic, peeled
    • ½ t chili flakes (or to taste if you like it spicier): you can also use Thai chilies. Remember to remove the membranes/ seeds as those are very spicy!
    • ¼ Cup roasted peanuts
    • 3T sesame oil
    • 2.5 lime juice or rice vinegar
    • 2 teaspoons fish sauce
    • 3 Tablespoon parmigiano

Blend the ingredients till it forms a chunky paste, and enjoy!

    Chicken Skewers

Looking for a great recipe for a summer BBQ? This Thai chicken skewer is full of authentic Thai flavor- so easy and delicious to make! Serve them with these teriyaki chicken skewers or Chinese chicken skewers for some variety.

Note: you can add red bell pepper to the skewers to make the meat go a longer way!

    Stir Fried Tofu

2 plates of stir fried Thai Basil tofu with white rice.

This Pad Kra Pao Tofu can easily be made vegan by using a vegan fish sauce and is ready on the dinner table in 15 minutes!

Note: the classic Thai recipe uses pork and holy basil, but holy basil is more difficult to find than Thai basil (even in the Asian grocery store), hence the substitution in many Pad Kra Pao recipes.

    Tofu Rolls

Vegan summer rolls on a serving plate around peanut sauce.

These vegan tofu rolls are a spin on the classic Vietnamese spring rolls, filled with fresh herbs and vegetables, tofu, and rice noodles for texture. Don't forget to serve with the peanut sauce, which gives it the flavor!

    Expert Tips

Tip #1: This Thai herb can be hard to find fresh in regular grocery stores, so you may need to go to the local Asian market.

Tip #2: Compared to sweet basil, Thai basil has a slight anise flavor and is a key ingredient in Thai cuisine, so you can add a bunch to many Thai recipes.

Tip #3: The easiest way to have a good supply of fresh basil on hand for stir fries etc is to grow it yourself in a Click&Grow garden! (Here's my review of the indoor gardening set.)

Hi I'm Zhen also known as GGG! I couldn't boil water till I was 18! However, I love creating community and nurturing people, so when I lived abroad (in St. Andrews then London) for 11 years, I started hosting regular parties for friends, and that's how I started cooking and helping out in professional kitchens. (Couldn't cook before that!) I even organised a supper club for charity (which strangers came to!) Learning to cook late, I make sure my recipes go into enough detail for those new to Asian cuisine or who love a test kitchen approach to cooking!
