    🥘 Ingredients

A spoonful of matcha powder next to water and a mason jar.

You only need 2 simple ingredients for this recipe:

    • matcha powder: there are 2 grades of Japanese. I highly recommend the better one (ceremonial grade matcha) for this recipe. Ceremonial matcha has a smoother, less bitter flavor. (I don't always recommend ceremonial matcha, because it's more expensive than culinary matcha, but because this recipe is so simple, you'll really be able to taste the improvement in the flavor.)
      • Matcha 抹茶 has an earthy flavor and, if the water is too hot, it can develop a bitter afternote. A Cold Brew makes for a smoother drink!
      • To get the vibrant green hue, make sure your matcha powder is fresh. (See Below for what fresh vs old matcha powder looks like.)
    • cold water
      • For Iced Matcha Tea: add ice cubes after shaking up your drink. Since you're adding the ice to cold tea (not hot), you don't have to worry that they dilute your drink.

Note: you will need an airtight jar to shake them up in (or a matcha whisk. A whisk gives finer results, but the Mason Jar method is less hassle so I'll let you decide which to go for!)

Comparing fresh and stale matcha powders, which are different shades of green.
The stale matcha powder is so dull, I almost confused it with Hojicha Powder!

    📖 Variations & Substitutes

    • Matcha Soda: Make your cold brew with the same amount of matcha but less cold water (3-4 Tablespoons), then top up with soda water or sparkling water. You can add a spoonful of matcha syrup if you want something sweet!
    • Matcha Latte Cold Brew: substitute the water with a milk of choice, such as dairy or coconut milk, then proceed as per the recipe. If you can't decide what milk goes best with matcha, click here.
    • Vanilla Matcha: shake with 1 teaspoon of vanilla syrup

    🔪 Step-by-Step Instructions

Adding matcha powder to water in a Mason Jar.
    1. Pour the water into a Mason Jar or container with an airtight lid. Add the matcha powder.
Shaking a tightly closed glass jar full of water and matcha powder.

    2. Close the container tightly then shake till you no longer see lumps of matcha powder.

Note: alternatively, you can use the traditional method and whisk the powder into the water if you like.

Serve with some Matcha chocolates on the side!

    🥡 How to Store

You can store homemade cold brew matcha in the fridge. (This is what I do when prepping matcha lattes.)

However, keep in mind that it will require whisking or shaking before serving, as the green tea powder will settle at the bottom of the container. (Matcha does not dissolve, it merely suspends in the water!)

    Health Benefits

    1. Healthy: This Japanese green tea contains amino acids and anti-oxidants (specifically, EGCG or epigallocatechin gallate) which help protect against cancer and are good for your health.
    2. No Jitters: Matcha has less caffeine than coffee but is still a great pick-me-up! The L-theanine content also has a soothing effect.

    Equipment

    • Mason Jar Substitute: Matcha Whisk and Small bowl OR airtight jar

    Ingredients

    • 1 teaspoon Matcha Powder About 2g, or to taste (different brands have slightly different flavors.) Don't use too much or you'll have a hard time "dissolving" the fine powder in the water.
    • 1 Cup Cold water

    Instructions

    • Pour the water into the jar, followed by the matcha powder.
    • Shut the jar tightly- you don't want the matcha to spill all over you- then shake vigorously (at least 40 seconds) till no dark green clumps are visible.
    • Open and enjoy!

    Notes

Hi I'm Zhen also known as GGG! I couldn't boil water till I was 18! However, I love creating community and nurturing people, so when I lived abroad (in St. Andrews then London) for 11 years, I started hosting regular parties for friends, and that's how I started cooking and helping out in professional kitchens. (Couldn't cook before that!) I even organised a supper club for charity (which strangers came to!) Learning to cook late, I make sure my recipes go into enough detail for those new to Asian cuisine or who love a test kitchen approach to cooking!
