⭐ Why This Recipe is a Star

    1. Oat Milk Matcha Latte is creamy and delicious: served hot, it's warming and cosy in fall and winter. Served iced, it's refreshing in summer.
    2. Saves Time: a homemade latte that is done in under 5 minutes and can be made in advance!
    3. Nutritious: This dairy-free drink is high in anti-oxidants thanks to the matcha (you're consuming the whole leaf!) It's the perfect pick me up for those who get the jitters with coffee as it has less caffeine than coffee.

Note: A lot of recipes start with "what is matcha" but I figure that, since you were looking for an Matcha Oat Latte recipe, you already know what it is! If you don't, click through to this collection of matcha recipes to find out more about this healthy Japanese tea. Or if you love lattes, check out this list of popular latte recipes.

    🥛 Ingredients

A carton of oat milk, a bowl of maple syrup and a packet of matcha powder.

You will only need 3 simple ingredients for your Matcha Latte with Oat Milk:

    • matcha powder: use a high-quality matcha powder since there are so few ingredients in this recipe. If you can get/ afford ceremonial matcha powder, go with that instead of culinary. Whilst matcha doesn't really expire, it does become stale. If so, your matcha will change from a bright green to a duller color. (See photo in "How to Store.") In this case, it's unfortunately time to get a new packet as old matcha doesn't have much flavor! You can also substitute with homemade matcha simple syrup (go easy on the sweetener later or skip it entirely here!)
    • oat milk: I use Oatly as per Starbucks. (They use the unsweetened Barista edition of Oatly. If you can't get Oatly in Canada, you could try Earth's Own.) However, feel free to substitute with your favorite brand or to make your own oat milk. (For the latter, you may need a nut milk bag!) Alternatively, you can also switch to another plant-based milk of your choice.
    • maple syrup: I use maple syrup as it's a liquid sweetener that dissolves easily, even in an iced latte. If not vegan, you can use honey, I don't recommend honey for a hot latte though as the temperature may impact the health benefits. Try 1 of these ways to sweeten lattes without sugar or 1 of these maple syrup alternatives. If using sugar, I suggest the "Mason Jar Method", blender or milk frother to "whisk" the matcha, for easy dissolving. (See "Step-by-Step Instructions" below) I don't recommend skipping a sweetener entirely, as matcha has an earthy, almost bitter flavor that needs to be balanced by some sweetness.

    📖 Variations & Substitutes

    • Hot Matcha Latte with Oat Milk: warm the milk in a small saucepan first OR microwave the drink on low after assembling. (Do this in 15-second intervals, as if too hot, the proteins coagulate and the texture changes.)
    • Iced Oat Milk Matcha: Add ice! Pouring the oat milk onto the ice (and matcha-water mixture) also helps to create more distinct layers in your drink.
    • Matcha Latte: If you do drink cows' milk, try this Starbucks inspired hot Matcha Green Tea Latte recipe. Or click here to try this Indian-Japanese fusion Matcha Chai Latte.
    • Hojicha Oat Milk Latte: you can substitute the matcha with Hojicha Powder. (Everything else stays the same.) Goes well with Hojicha Mochi Bites!
    • Vanilla Matcha Oat Milk Latte: Use ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract per Cup of Milk and sweeten to taste.
    • Pandan Matcha Oat Milk Latte: Use 1 Tablespoon of homemade pandan syrup to 1 Cup of oat milk and ½ teaspoon of matcha powder. Some testers actually preferred this Pandan Matcha combination to regular Matcha Latte!
    • Fruity Matcha Oat Latte: Matcha goes well with fruits such as blueberry and pineapple.

    🥣 How to "dissolve" matcha

Traditionally, you sift the matcha powder then use a bamboo whisk to suspend it in hot water. (The powder doesn't actually dissolve.) However, I don't have 1!

I've tried several alternative whisking methods and these are the results, listed from best to "worst":

    • shaking the powder and liquid in a mason jar- easiest, cheapest and most effective way to blend matcha! Perfect for those pressed for time and creates a decent foam. (Not all the matcha powder will suspend perfectly in the milk, but there won't be lumps in your drink.) The only downside is that you won't get the nice green and white layers in your latte. You can use this to froth milk for cold brew drinks too!
    • using a blender- dissolves the powder the best and creates a wonderful froth, but the clean-up is a pain. Only worth it for large batches! (However, honestly, oat milk doesn't froth as well as regular milk- it doesn't get quite as foamy, nor do the bubbles last as long. If you want the foamiest oat latte possible, then use this blender method.)
    • milk frother- works great but too much expense if you don't already own 1! Also note that the frother will heat up your drink, so it's more suitable for hot matcha oat milk.
    • regular whisk or fork- leaves the most lumps and, honestly, the spillage is real unless you have a really deep and wide container! You can sift out clumps after if you want, but that's too much work, if you ask me!

    🔪 Step-by-Step Instructions

Matcha powder on oat milk in a mason jar.

Method 1: Shaking in Mason Jar

    1. Shake the oat milk then pour into the Mason Jar.
    2. Next, scoop in the matcha powder (If you add the matcha first, it'll stick to the walls of the container.)
    3. Close securely then shake vigorously till no lumps remain. Your oat milk latte will froth up nicely!
    4. Open carefully to prevent dripping, sweeten to taste and enjoy!
Matcha powder and whole milk in a white bowl.
Ideally you want a deeper bowl than this to avoid spilling!

Method 2: Traditional Matcha Whisk, Regular Whisk or Fork

    1. Add the sifted matcha powder and 1 Tablespoon of hot water to a deep and wide bowl. (Water no hotter than 160°F-170°F (70°C-80°C))
    2. Whisk till no clumps can be seen. Transfer to your cup.
    3. Shake the oat milk then pour into the bloomed matcha.
    4. Sweeten to taste. Serve and enjoy!

    Method 3: Blending

    1. Shake the oat milk.
    2. Add the oat milk, matcha and sweetener to the blender
    3. Blend till frothy
    4. Serve and enjoy!

    Method 4: Electric milk frother

    1. Shake the oat milk.
    2. Add the milk, matcha and sweetener to the frother
    3. Froth till the powder is totally "melted" into the liquid.
    4. Serve and enjoy!

    🥡 How to Store

Comparing fresh and stale matcha powders, which are different shades of green.
It should be obvious which is the old matcha but, if not, the powder at the bottom is the one you want to toss! (The one on top is nice and fresh.)

This Matcha drink can be made in advance!

Simply store extras in an airtight container in the fridge. The matcha will settle at the bottom so you'll need to whisk or shake before drinking to disperse the matcha powder (and create the milk foam) before drinking.

    👩🏻‍🍳 Expert Tips

Tip #1: Shake your oat milk before using to make sure it's creamy! If not, it'll separate and you'll end out pouring out a thin, grey liquid that isn't very attractive nor taste too good!

Tip #2: Matcha doesn't whisk well into milk, so always whisk it into water. You can, however, "dissolve" the matcha directly in milk if using the Mason Jar, Frother or Blender methods.

    💭  Recipe FAQs

How much caffeine is in the recipe?

According to USNews.com, ½ teaspoon of matcha powder contains approximately 20-39 milligrams of caffeine so that's the amount of caffeine if you follow my recipe to a T. (Much less than coffee! (95 mg per 8-ounces.) You can, however, increase the amount of matcha up to 2 teaspoons per cup of oat milk which will, of course, increase the caffeine content too! (The more matcha you use, the more sweetener you'll need to complement the "vegetal" flavor.)

Why is my Oat Milk Matcha Latte bitter?

Matcha naturally has an earthy flavor- this is evened out by the creaminess of the milk and the sweetness of the syrup. However, if the water used is too hot, your matcha will become even more bitter. The ideal water temperature for a mellow matcha is 160°F-170°F (70°C-80°C)

How do I store my matcha powder?

Matcha is very delicate and cannot be exposed to heat and air without losing its flavor and health benefits. If using a ziplock bag, for example, you even need to squeeze the air out before sealing to prevent oxidation! Next, store it in a dark airtight container in the fridge (as matcha easily absorbs flavors- you don't want your latte to taste of, say, chicken wings!- and should not be exposed to light.)
