Ssamjang is a delicious Korean dipping sauce- perfect for chicken, beef, tofu, lettuce wraps, vegetable crudités, or Korean BBQ meat. (As promised, my recipes are not for flavor wimps and this is definitely one of the most boldly flavoured Korean sauces! You can buy it pre-made, in a tub, in Korean supermarkets but homemade is always healthier!)

You will need a few simple ingredients:

    • 3 Tablespoons of doenjjang (Korean soybean paste)
    • 3/4 Tablespoon gochujang (Korean red pepper paste)
    • ½- ¾ Tablespoon honey or white sugar
    • ½ teaspoon sesame oil
    • ¼ red onion
    • 1 spring onion
    • optional: lightly toasted sesame seeds
    • optional: if you want a spicier sauce, you can stir in some gochugaru chili flakes. (Start with ¼ teaspoon and taste till it's a the right flavor.)

Note: You can also add some garlic- Korean food is heavy on the use of garlic!

    🔪 Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. Over low heat, heat the doenjang, gochujang, sugar (if using) and sesame oil in a pan.
    2. Stir and heat till it bubbles around the edges. Turn off the fire and stir in the honey (if using honey instead of sugar.)
    3. Add the sliced onions- the sauce should not be too think. If not scoop able, add water, bit by bit till it reaches the right consistency, and stir well.

Greedygirlgourmet eating 2 sandwiches in Scotland

Hi I'm Zhen also known as GGG! I couldn't boil water till I was 18! However, I love creating community and nurturing people, so when I lived abroad (in St. Andrews then London) for 11 years, I started hosting regular parties for friends, and that's how I started cooking and helping out in professional kitchens. (Couldn't cook before that!) I even organised a supper club for charity (which strangers came to!) Learning to cook late, I make sure my recipes go into enough detail for those new to Asian cuisine or who love a test kitchen approach to cooking!
